From Refactor Tools to Change Plans
Why AI agents make the old lesson of IDE refactoring broader: inspect the system before changing it.
A small change can look obvious from inside one file.
Rename this variable. Update this label. Replace this field. Adjust this prompt.
But software does not experience changes as small requests. It experiences them through references, tests, routes, generated files, docs, examples, data contracts, and user expectations.
That is why old IDE refactor tools are still a useful mental model for working with AI coding agents.
The old lesson
A good refactor tool is not just a faster search and replace.
When you rename a symbol, the editor can ask the project: where is this defined, where is it referenced, which matches are real, and which files need to move together?
The value is not typing speed. The value is visibility.
The tool sees more of the system before it changes the system.
What agents add
Agents extend that pattern beyond symbols.
A refactor tool can follow a variable, method, class, or import. An agent can inspect the broader task: source files, tests, docs, API shapes, UI copy, build scripts, naming patterns, generated artifacts, and the intent behind the change.
That does not make the agent right. It makes the agent useful before editing.
For anything with unclear blast radius, the better first prompt is not “make the change.” It is:
Map what this change might touch. Tell me what you would inspect, what should stay out of scope, and which checks should run after the edit.
That short pause is the agentic version of previewing a refactor.
From edit to change plan
The old habit was:
- Open the file.
- Make the edit.
- Search for breakage.
- Run tests.
- Patch failures.
The better agent habit is:
- State the intended change.
- Ask the agent to inspect the likely impact.
- Review the scope.
- Make the smallest coherent edit.
- Run real validation.
- Review the diff yourself.
This does not need to become ceremony. The plan should be smaller than the work.
A typo may need one file and one quick check. A naming change may need call sites, tests, docs, payload examples, and compatibility notes. A public content change may need routes, indexes, generated discovery files, translations, and a quick safety pass.
The work decides the size of the plan.
The point
The strongest use of agents is not asking them to type faster.
It is asking them to see the system before they change it.
That is the same lesson developers already learned from IDE refactors. Manual confidence is weak when a system has more references than one person can hold in working memory.
Agents can still over-edit, miss runtime behavior, hallucinate relationships, or make a small task larger than needed. So keep the scope explicit, verify with real commands, and review the final diff like the outcome still belongs to you.
The practical default is simple:
Before changing a system, let the tool inspect the system.
Then change deliberately.
